Lesbian Activist Mary Beth Maxwell Short-listed for Position of Labor Secretary

Mary Beth Maxwell could become America's first openly gay cabinet member if chosen to lead the Department of Labor in Barack Obama's administration. Maxwell is the founding executive director of the labor organization American Rights at Work, established in 2003. Before that she was a national field director at Jobs With Justice and the deputy field director of NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Out 100's Alex Ross Wins the Guardian First Book Award

As of November, 2008 was already an undeniably good year for writer Alex Ross. He picked up a National Book Critics Circle Award for his history of 20th century music, The Rest Is Noise, continued writing his blog of the same name along with music criticism for The New Yorker, won a MacArthur Foundation 'genius grant,' and was chosen as a 2008 Out 100 honoree. Now word comes that The Rest Is Noise has won the 40-year-old Harvard grad the Guardian first book award.

Rumor Has It A-Rod Cheated on Madonna with Model Melissa Britos

According to online gossip mongers, baseball star A-Rod may already be cheating on his rumored girlfriend Madonna. Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez, who only recently finished a nasty divorce battle with ex-wife Cynthia Rodriguez, reportedly has been spotted making time with model Melissa Britos. One of the model’s friends allegedly said A-Rod became ‘obsessed’ with Britos after meeting her at a party in November.

P!nk, Kathy Griffin Among 2009 Grammy Award Nominations

Gay favorites P!nk, Kathy Griffin, Katy Perry, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Kylie Minogue and Cyndi Lauper are among this year’s 51st Annual Grammy Awards nominees announced on Wednesday night. British group Coldplay was nominated for the top three Grammy Award categories, including album and song of the hear for their latest album Viva La Vida. Other top nominees include Lil Wayne, Ne-Yo, Jay-Z and Kanye West.

Famous West Hollywood Strip Club The Body Shop Goes Up in Flames

Fire broke out this morning at the landmark strip club The Body Shop on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. The LA County Fire Dept received the first call at about 6:45 am. The Body Shop is located at 8250 Sunset Blvd and claims to be in continuous operation for nearly 50 years.

Oprah Goes to Washington

Daytime talk show queen Oprah Winfrey is taking her top-rated show to Washington, D.C. for an entire week to celebrate the inauguration of Barack Obama, the first African-American to be elected president of the United States. In honor of the occasion, Winfrey has reportedly rented out the Opera House at the Kennedy Center to film her chatfest. Winfrey is also expected to throw one of the most lavish and exclusive bashes of the year in honor of President-elect Obama's inauguration.

The video, which also stars Hollywood celebs Neil Patrick Harris, Margaret Cho, John C. Reilly and more, mocks the supporters of the Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage, which passed in California during the November election.

Vatican: Gays Don't Need Protection Laws

The Vatican has come out against a United Nations resolution that calls on all governments to decriminalize homosexuality. The resolution, Archbishop Celestino Migliore said, would 'add new categories of those protected from discrimination' and could lead to the decline of heterosexual marriage. France will propose the resolution this month on behalf of the 27-member European Union. The Vatican is not a member, but it uses the Euro.

Twilight Stars Go for Gay Roles

Kristen Stewart, the Bella of Twilight's box office ball, is going to play Joan Jett in a biopic about the Runaways while Stewart's fangy co-star, Robert Pattinson, will play Salvador Dalí in Little Ashes, which explores Dalí's relationship with the poet Federico García Lorca.
